プログラミング関連のドキュメントで頻出する英語表現を紹介します。とりわけAPIリファレンスやマニュアルでよく用いられる表現を取り上げます。

今回は「rather than」や「greater than」などthanを使った表現です。

rather than 〜

「〜というより」や「〜ではなく」という表現です。

ratherは「むしろ」を表す副詞で、この「rather than」の形でよく用いられます。例：

• You should always use HTTPS rather than HTTP.
  • HTTPではなくHTTPSを常に使うべきである。
• Rather than deleting the element, simply hide it.
  • 要素を削除するというより、単に非表示にします。

other than 〜

「〜以外」や「〜を除いて」という表現です。例：

• Set a value other than zero.
  • ゼロ以外の値を設定します。
• Other than that, the items of each list can be in any order.
  • それを除けば、各リストの項目はどのような順序にもできます。

greater than 〜 / less than 〜

「greater than 〜」は「〜より大きい（〜超）」、「less than 〜」は「〜より小さい（〜未満）」という大小を示す表現です。

• Int: Width in pixels. Must be greater than 0.
  • Int：ピクセル単位での幅。0より大きい必要。
  • ※ 関数のパラメーターの説明
• The length of the message must be less than 300 characters.
  • メッセージの長さは300文字未満でなければなりません。

以上や以下にする「or equal to」

「greater than 〜」や「less than 〜」を読んだり書いたりする際に注意したいのは、「〜」に基準値が入らない点です。例えば「less than 300」に300ちょうどは含まれないので、整数なら「299、298、297…」がその範囲です。

もし含む場合、言い換えると「以上」や「以下」を表すには、「or equal to」（またはそれに等しい）と一緒に使います。つまりやや長いですが、「greater than or equal to 〜」や「less than or equal to 〜」となります。例：

• The offset value must be greater than or equal to 0.
  • オフセット値は0以上である必要があります。
• The height will be less than or equal to MAX_HEIGHT.
  • 高さはMAX_HEIGHT以下になります。

シンプルな「or greater (more)」や「or less (fewer)」

なお「〜以上」や「〜以下」を表す場合、「〜 or greater (more)」や「〜 or less (fewer)」という短めのシンプルな表現も使われます。例：

• The value returned by the function is 100 or greater.
  • この関数によって戻される値は100以上です。
• The file size needs to be 100MB or less.
  • ファイルサイズは100MB以下の必要があります。

その他「比較級 than」

「greater/less than」のように、「比較級 than」を使った他の表現もあります。カテゴリー別に、対照となるセットで挙げてみます。
